This month we launched the Urban Aid workshop – our enhanced, scenario-based training session designed to give young people practical skills for violence prevention and emergency response. Developed with medical professionals, this workshop focuses on weapon-related incidents, wound management, and conflict prevention, all delivered in a safe and engaging environment. Due to high demand, each school or organisation can receive one fully funded session. With a lot of information to digest, here are some common questions about the programme:
You asked, we answered:
- Who are the Urban Aid sessions aimed at?
The workshops are designed for young people aged 11-18, but we can consider other age groups upon request. They are ideal for schools, youth organisations, and community groups looking to promote safety and awareness.
- How many students can attend each workshop session?
Each workshop accommodates ideally 15 students, but no more than 20 per session to ensure an interactive, immersive and meaningful experience.
- What does the Urban Aid workshop involve?
The workshop includes scenario-based training on weapon-related injuries, wound management, prevention strategies, and conflict awareness, delivered through hands-on activities and discussions.
- How long is each workshop session?
Typically, sessions last around 2 hours, depending on group size and activities. With young people with SEN or additional needs we can tailor this to suit the group if required.
- How many sessions can a school or organisation book?
Due to high demand, we offer one fully funded workshop per school or organisation. Additional sessions can be arranged at a cost. These costs are kept as low as possible to make it as accessible to as many organisations as possible.
- Is this a first aid course?
No, it is a specialised workshop focused on weapon-related incidents, not a traditional first aid course. This gives young people the knowledge to do something to help in those critical moments, before the emergency services arrive.
- Who delivers the Urban Aid workshops?
Workshops are led by trained, qualified professionals and have been developed in collaboration with trained medical professionals.
- How can my school or organisation apply for a workshop?
Please contact us via our website or email talk@jamesbrindleyfoundation.co.uk to express interest and schedule a session. We will confirm availability and bookings.
- Are there age restrictions?
The workshop is geared towards young people aged 11-18, but we can consider tailored sessions for other age groups on request.
- What safety measures are in place during the workshop?
All activities are conducted in a controlled environment with strict safety protocols to ensure participant well-being.
- Can the workshop be tailored to specific needs?
Yes, we can adapt certain aspects to suit your group’s requirements, subject to availability.
- Is there any preparation required for students before attending the workshop?
No prior preparation is necessary. Students should come ready to participate actively.
- Will parents or guardians need to be involved or informed?
We don’t necessarily require consent, but the school or organisation may want to inform parents. Participants in senior schools and above will watch a scenario-based film that depicts a violent gang-related situation. The film contains sensitive content and can be quite shocking, as it realistically portrays the dangers and consequences associated with such incidents. We provide all participants and organisers with disclaimers beforehand, informing them that the film discusses sensitive issues and may be distressing for some viewers. We do not show this film to year 6 primary school students, instead we replace this section with a different activity.
- Are there any costs beyond the fully funded workshop?
The initial workshop is fully funded; additional sessions or tailored activities will involve a fee. However, we keep these costs as low as possible to ensure they are accessible as possible. Contact us for details.
- What topics are covered besides wound management?
Topics include understanding knife crime, risk recognition, conflict prevention, and safe emergency responses.
- How does the workshop support youth safety and crime prevention?
It educates about risks, teaches practical response skills, and promotes awareness to help prevent violence.
- Do you offer follow-up support or resources?
Yes, we provide supplementary materials and can guide towards additional community programmes, including our accredited Full Circle Programme.
- Can multiple schools or organisations in the same area participate?
Yes, but each organisation is limited to one funded session, due to the increase of demand across the West Midlands. Advanced booking is a must!
- How do you keep the workshop engaging and age-appropriate?
Content is tailored for the age group, using interactive scenarios and discussions to promote understanding.
- What sets Urban Aid apart from other safety programmes?
Its focus on weapon-related incidents, developed in collaboration with medical experts, provides practical, scenario-based training on a vital issue. The programme equips young people with the knowledge and confidence to respond effectively in critical moments, empowering them to take action and make a difference before emergency services arrive.
