Urban Aid

Delivered by the James Brindley Foundation, Urban Aid is a short, practical workshop that helps young people stay safer and feel more confident in emergencies. Popular with schools and youth groups, the session mixes clear prevention advice with hands-on, scenario-based learning in a relaxed, supportive setting.

This workshop matters because it gives pupils the confidence to act calmly and safely in the crucial minutes before emergency services arrive. Urban Aid is timed to support the Year 6 → Year 7 transition, when many young people start travelling independently and need stronger personal awareness, risk management and decision-making skills. Recent Parliamentary discussion about teaching emergency life-saving skills in schools highlights how important this is – and it’s exactly the kind of thing we already deliver.

Each session is designed for 15-20 students so everyone gets stuck in and learns by doing. Because demand for our knife crime awareness work is consistently high, we offer one fully funded Urban Aid workshop per school or organisation; if you need more sessions, we’re happy to talk about options.

The workshop brings together proactive approaches to preventing knife crime with practical, reactive learning on how to respond safely in emergency situations. Participants pick up real-world skills like making an effective 999 call under pressure, managing serious bleeding (not limited to knife injuries), and what to do when there’s no first-aid kit or tourniquet available. All wound-management content has been developed with a qualified medical professional and is delivered safely and responsibly.

Please note Urban Aid is not a formal first aid course – it’s a specialist, scenario-based workshop focused on prevention and responding to weapon-related incidents. The session is fully funded, though voluntary donations are welcome to help us keep offering these vital workshops to young people.

What’s needed to host at your venue?

We’d love to bring this practical, empowering workshop to your pupils – simple skills that can make a big difference.

To host Urban Aid we’ll need a space for 15-20 participants, a screen with audio for visual content, one staff member to support engagement, and two hours of uninterrupted time with attendees.
